A shout-out to the women writing and translating across languages — especially the ESEA and ESEA diasporic women whose work and voices deserve greater visibility!
Since 2013, Women in Translation Month (WITMonth) has become an important moment in the literary calendar — a time to celebrate women writing and translating across languages, and to recognise the work that allows literature to travel between cultures, histories, and communities.
To celebrate WITMonth, we place Women in Translation at the centre, with a focus on ESEA and ESEA diasporic voices. Our selection brings together books connected to this space in different ways: through women authors, women translators, or both; through ESEA writers and translators; and through works shaped by East and Southeast Asian languages, cultures, and experiences.
At the heart of this feature is also a desire to make translation itself — and the labour behind it — more visible. Translators do far more than move words from one language into another. Their choices, knowledge, care, and creativity shape how a work is encountered in a new context. Yet this labour can too easily disappear behind the finished book. We want to recognise the women doing this work, and especially to make more space for ESEA and ESEA diasporic women whose presence as writers, translators, and cultural mediators has too often been overlooked.
For us, Women in Translation Month is not only about creating visibility for one month. August can be a moment of attention, but it should not be the boundary of that attention. We want these writers, translators, and their work to keep being read, discussed, discovered, and supported throughout the year.
This collection is part of that ongoing commitment: to make the work visible, to acknowledge the labour that carries it across languages, and to ensure these voices continue to be heard beyond August.

从2013年以来，女性译著月 Women in Translation Month / WITMonth 逐步发展成为每年八月的文学庆祝活动。当女性身份与翻译、写作交织在一起，她们的声音与劳动反而在文学界中更加隐身。于是女性译著月诞生了——旨在打破翻译界由男性主导的不平衡现象，使更多女性译者、女性作者以及她们的作品可以触及更广阔的读者与世界。
2025年我们开始逐步建立光华的网站，并在2025年8月搭建了女性译著月专栏，展示华语与东亚&东南亚女性译者、女性作者和她们的作品，希望她们的声音可以不只是在八月被庆祝。今年我们依然延续这一理念，将全年展示华语与东亚&东南亚女性译者、女性作者的作品，致敬女性在写作、翻译中的劳动。
谢谢她们跨越语言、时间、地景，跨越文化、历史、甚至是误解，将故事载向更辽远、广阔的世界，使我们得以在此相聚。
